Craigslist Job Posting Tips: Use an image in your job posting

If you’re hiring, you really should be using craigslist.  It reaches a lot of candidates, and at $25/posting in most markets it’s the best value you can find for advertising your job.  But it’s not all wine and roses.  The results companies get from Craigslist vary wildly depending on their location and the type of job they’re hiring for. This is the latest in a series of blog posts that shares the little details that will help you get the best results from your craigslist job posting.

Let’s start out by taking a look at how craigslist returns job listings.  The screen shot below shows typical craigslist job results for the New York area.  Do a quick scan of the list and note which jobs stand out to you.

Most people’s eyes are drawn to the first job, and the first job in the Wednesday block, but many people’s attention is also drawn to the Super Cool Interns Needed for Social Gaming Startup job.  This posting is buried right in the middle of the pack.  Why should it attract attention?  Let’s take one more look and see if we can figure it out.

See that? Craigslist puts a little orange img next to the posting because the posting contains an image, an <img> tag, somewhere in it’s text.  This is a really simple technique you can use to draw more attention to your craigslist job posting.  Include an image in your posting, and craigslist will give you a bright little img next to your job when it displays in the job list.

If you’re a HireFlo user this is handled for you.  The system generates HTML that you can just copy and paste into craigslist and that HTML includes a button image as shown below.

This provides 2 benefits.  First, the posting has an image so it gets the orange img in the search results.  Second, that button draws applicants attention and it makes it clear, click here to apply to this job.

Conclusion

So, when you’re posting your job on craigslist, keep this tip in mind and include an image in the body of your posting.  You may also want to check out the previous tip Craigslist Job Posting Tips: Post your job after 10:00pm.
